From Screen Time to Family Time
February 10, 2026 Your almost daily guide to navigating AI as a family.
Hey friends,
This week, my daughter and me talked about her little robot toy as her friend. It was a sweet moment, but it also got me thinking. We're so excited about all the amazing things AI can do, but we also need to remember that it's a tool, not a replacement for real human connection. It's a conversation we're starting to have more and more in our house, and it's one I think we all need to be having.
Kids Are Calling AI Their 'Friend'
The Story: A new survey from Vodafone found that almost a third of children who use AI chatbots consider the technology to be a friend. They're turning to AI for advice, to share secrets they wouldn't tell their parents, and spending an average of 42 minutes a day chatting with them.
What This Means for You: It's a startling statistic, but it's not surprising. AI chatbots are designed to be engaging and empathetic, but they lack true understanding and accountability. As parents, we need to be aware of these pseudo-relationships and help our kids understand the difference between a friendly chatbot and a real friend. It's a great opportunity to talk about what makes a real friendship: shared experiences, give-and-take, and genuine feelings.
Try This Week: Have a conversation with your kids about their online friends. Ask them who they talk to online and what they talk about. Use Vodafone's "Breakfast Club" concept as a conversation starter: what are the "ingredients" of a real friend versus an AI friend?

Is Your Next Big Idea Safe?
The Story: Billionaire investor Mark Cuban has a stark warning for entrepreneurs: stop filing for patents. He argues that the moment you file a patent, every large language model (LLM) can be trained on it, and your intellectual property is no longer yours. He believes trade secrets will become the new norm for protecting innovation.
What This Means for You: If you're an entrepreneur or have a side hustle, this is a major shift in how to think about protecting your ideas. The old playbook of patenting everything might actually be giving your competitors a roadmap. It's a reminder that in the age of AI, your data and your unique processes are more valuable than ever.
Try This Week: If you have a business idea, instead of immediately thinking about patents, think about what you can protect as a trade secret. What are the unique processes, customer lists, or data that you can keep in-house? Start building a "moat" around your business that isn't just based on legal filings.

The New Parent Trap: AI and Age Gates
The Story: A new report from Common Sense Media shows that the vast majority of adults want age verification for social media, gaming platforms, and AI services. While there's a push for new laws to protect kids online, 29% of parents are concerned that kids can easily bypass these age gates.
What This Means for You: We're all on the same page: we want to protect our kids online. But the reality is that technology is always a step ahead of the rules. This isn't a reason to give up, but it's a reminder that we can't rely solely on laws and platforms to keep our kids safe. It still comes down to having open conversations and staying involved in their digital lives.
Try This Week: Check the privacy settings on the apps and websites your kids use. Have a family meeting to talk about online safety and why it's important not to share personal information. Frame it as a team effort to stay safe online, not as a lecture.

The AI Productivity Paradox
The Story: We all hoped AI would save us time, but a new study from Harvard Business Review found the opposite: AI actually intensifies work. Employees are working faster, taking on more tasks, and blurring the lines between work and personal time. The result? Increased productivity in the short term, but a higher risk of burnout in the long run.
What This Means for You: As entrepreneurs and parents, we're always looking for ways to be more productive. But this study is a critical reminder that AI is a tool, not a magic wand. If we're not careful, it can lead to a feeling of being "always on" and actually increase our stress levels. The key is to be intentional about how we use AI and to set clear boundaries.
Try This Week: Identify one task you can delegate to AI this week, but also schedule a specific time to disconnect from all technology. The goal is to use AI to create more space in your life, not to fill every moment with more work. It's about working smarter, not just harder.

Family AI Activity
This week, let's create a family story together using an AI image generator.
1. Brainstorm: As a family, come up with a fun, imaginative story. It can be about anything - a magical creature, a futuristic city, or a silly adventure. 2. Create: Use an AI image generator (like Midjourney or DALL-E 3) to create a picture of a scene from your story. 3. Share: Share your story and the AI-generated image with the AI-Powered Super Parents community! Let's see what amazing stories we can create together.
