From Screen Time to Family Time

March 22, 2026

Your almost daily guide to navigating AI as a family.

Hey friends,

So the other day, my kid asked me if robots sleep. I told them they do, but instead of dreaming, they just update their software. They thought that was the funniest thing ever. But it got me thinking about how differently our kids are going to see the world. To them, AI is just another part of life, like electricity or the internet was for us.

That is exactly why we need to stay on top of this stuff. Not to be the fun police, but to be the guides they actually need. The landscape is shifting fast, and this week's news proves it. From the stuff flooding our kids' screens to the chips powering the future, there is a lot to unpack. Let's get into it.

AI "Slop" Is Flooding Children's Media

The Story: Low quality, mass produced AI generated videos are taking over YouTube and targeting young kids. We are talking about channels pumping out 50 videos a day. The problem is not just the volume. The content is often wrong or even dangerous, like showing kids riding in cars without seatbelts or babies eating choking hazards. Experts are calling it "toddler AI misinformation at an industrial scale."

What This Means for You: If you have young kids, you cannot trust the algorithm to be a babysitter anymore. The stuff that looks like harmless cartoons might actually be teaching your kids the wrong things or messing with their developing brains. It is a wild west out there right now.

Try This Week: Audit your kid's YouTube history. If you see weird, faceless channels pumping out endless nursery rhymes, block them. Stick to verified, trusted creators or switch them over to platforms with actual human curation.

A National Blueprint for AI

The Story: The White House just rolled out a massive national AI legislative framework. It is a big deal because it covers everything from protecting kids online to training the workforce for an AI economy. The goal is to set consistent national rules instead of having a confusing patchwork of state laws.

What This Means for You: For parents, it means help might be on the way. The framework specifically calls for giving parents better tools to manage their kids' digital lives and forcing platforms to implement safety features. For entrepreneurs, it signals that federal regulation is coming, which will shape how we build and use AI tools moving forward.

Try This Week: Talk to your older kids about how laws are starting to catch up with technology. Ask them what rules they think should exist for AI and social media. You might be surprised by their answers.

The $20 Billion AI Chip Factory

The Story: Elon Musk just officially launched the Terafab Project in Texas. It is a massive $20 billion factory designed to build AI chips for Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI. The goal is to produce a terawatt of computing power per year. That is about 50 times the current global capacity. They are even talking about putting data centers in space.

What This Means for You: This sounds like science fiction, but it is happening right now. If they pull this off, the cost of AI computing could drop dramatically. That means smarter robots, better self driving cars, and more powerful AI tools available to everyone. The future is being built in our backyard.

Try This Week: Show your kids a picture of a massive data center and explain that this is where the "cloud" actually lives. It is a great way to make abstract tech concepts feel real and tangible.

Google's Personal Intelligence is Now Free

The Story: Google just rolled out its Personal Intelligence feature to all free tier users in the US. This tool links data from all your Google apps to give you hyper personalized answers. It can plan a trip based on your past vacations, help you shop based on previous purchases, or give you a morning summary of your calendar and emails.

What This Means for You: This is a massive productivity upgrade hiding in plain sight. You no longer have to pay for a premium subscription to get an AI assistant that actually knows you. But it also means you need to be mindful of what data you are sharing and ensure your privacy settings are locked down.

Try This Week: Open the Google app, switch to AI Mode, and ask it to plan a weekend family activity based on things you have searched for recently. See how well it actually knows you.

Family AI Activity

This week, we are turning into AI architects. Sit down with your kids and ask them to design their dream house using an AI image generator like Midjourney or ChatGPT. But here is the catch. They have to describe it using only words. No drawing allowed.

Have them think about the materials, the colors, the setting, and the crazy features they want. A slide from the bedroom to the kitchen? A treehouse on the roof? Let them get wild with it. Once they have their description, type it in and see what the AI comes up with. It is a great way to teach them about prompt engineering while having a ton of fun.
